INHABITANTS:

This district is located in the north-eastern part of the municipality, between the mouths of the Tenoya and Arucas ravines. The area consists of gentle slopes, not very high, the white colour of which is derived from their age and the limestone accumulated in the outer layers.

At the end of the 15th century, the area was still covered by dense vegetation, with Canary Island palms, dragon trees, Canarian cactus spurge, common Canary spurge, Canary Island tamarisc and other weeds and grasses covering its gentle slopes.

The bottom of the ravines were humid, and with a darker green vegetation, thanks to the springs feeding the waterfalls passing through the Cardones valley, or the place known as El Caldero. The fields were green all year round, so pre-Hispanic islanders probably used the area for putting their livestock out to pasture.

This landscape has been transformed into an area of intense agriculture and livestock breeding. The springs dried up, the vegetable earth disappeared from some of the ridges due to stone extraction in the quarries, terraces were built for crops, and pools and reservoirs were built. As a result of this, the original flora practically disappeared and wildlife was severely reduced.

There are still a few banana plantations, vegetable gardens, potato crops, fruit trees, and livestock farms, although they too are starting to disappear.

The area is becoming increasingly residential, with a large number of settlements such as Lomo Espino, El Perdigón, El Valle, the El Lomo de Arucas residential estate, Las Palmeras, Hoya de Ariñez, Los Guirres, El Lomo Chico, El Lomo Grande and San Francisco Javier.
