On
the left-hand border of the Arucas ravine, between Hoya de San Juan and
Montaña de Cardones, we find two inhabited villages known by the
names of El Hornillo Alto and El Hornillo Bajo. It was originally a small
village consisting of the houses of farm labourers, in the middle of the
farms where they worked. El Hornillo (literally, “little oven”)
owes its name to the fires that were always lit in country houses, most
of which had their own ovens for making bread or cooking.
However, for other authors, the name of Hornillo could
refer to the fact that local temperatures are always relatively high
because of the layout of the land, with heat tending to accumulate. |
